Maxine Waters’ crypto walkout splits Democrats

The top Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee tried making some good trouble this morning. Her counterpart on the House Agriculture Committee wasn’t thrilled.

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) led a walkout of a joint hearing between the two panels focused on the regulation of crypto markets. Her objection technically changed the hearing into a roundtable, per House rules. It also drew an indirect rebuke from Rep. Angie Craig (D-Minn.).

“I'm here because I think we need to be engaged and part of the discussion," said Craig, who didn’t leave the room with Waters. "We have a responsibility to be here and be part of the solution."

Craig is running for the Senate seat that opened up after Sen. Tina Smith (D-Minn.) announced she’s not running for reelection in 2026.
