Rep. Jen Kiggans’ (R-Va.) bill to extend the enhanced Obamacare subsidies for a year is steadily picking up bipartisan backers as the government shutdown wears on.
Party leaders in the House are only growing more entrenched in their position on the premium tax credits that expire at year’s end. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries recently ruled out a one-year extension of the subsidies as insufficient. Speaker Mike Johnson has cautioned that if the House GOP did agree to something, it would likely need to include dramatic changes.
Meanwhile, rank-and-file moderates are hopping onto Kiggans’ bill, which now has 28 cosponsors evenly split between Republicans and Democrats. That’s still a small sliver of the House. But it shows the rising interest in publicly aligning with the bipartisan push.
