Johnson says he may need weekend to solve SALT

Negotiations to craft a new deduction cap for state and local taxes have gone sideways, with Speaker Mike Johnson saying he now needs the weekend to try to reach a deal with SALT holdouts.

Tensions are running high inside the House Republican Conference over the SALT cap fight. There’s frustration within the SALT Caucus – composed primarily of blue-state Republicans – toward Johnson. And there’s a lot of anger at House Ways and Means Committee Chair Jason Smith (R-Mo.).
