Portal: Late budgets complicate appropriations work

Presidential budgets are being delivered to Congress later and later with each administration. That’s making life harder for appropriators.

Presidents are nearly always late with their budget requests during the first year of a new administration. Up until President Donald Trump’s first term, though, it was unusual for budgets to slip into March, April or even May. The law requires presidents to send their budget requests for the next fiscal year by the first Monday in February.
