Top Senate Republicans aren’t objecting to a potential White House plan to suspend habeas corpus in legal cases involving undocumented immigrants, even as Congress may be forced to vote on the issue if President Donald Trump decides to go this route.
White House adviser Stephen Miller said on Friday that the Trump administration was “actively looking at” suspending habeas corpus in these cases. Habeas corpus is the constitutional principle that anyone detained by the U.S. government can challenge their imprisonment.
