The Supreme Court sided today with a bipartisan coalition of lawmakers and upheld the constitutionality of a federal program that promotes universal broadband access.
In a 6-3 decision, justices rejected a constitutional challenge to the Universal Service Fund, which subsidizes internet access in schools, libraries and rural and low-income areas. The decision is a major win for lawmakers from both sides of the aisle who urged the Court to keep the program — which they admit has flaws — alive.
