News: Senate Commerce Committee Chair Ted Cruz (R-Texas) made changes to his proposal to restrict states from regulating artificial intelligence ahead of potential floor votes this week on Republicans’ sweeping reconciliation package.
The tweaks appear to have had at least two aims. One was addressing possible procedural problems tied to the chamber’s arcane reconciliation rules. The second was opposition from some Republican senators worried about how their states’ plans would be affected. Cruz’s office didn’t respond to a request for comment.
The parliamentarian blessed the proposal over the weekend in a surprise win for Cruz, though the language appears to soften the incentives for states to hold off on regulating AI.
