The House Foreign Affairs Committee is working to soften aspects of a bill aimed at combating the smuggling of AI chips to China that industry officials have complained are too onerous.
The House Foreign Affairs Committee is specifically looking to ease a proposed requirement that advanced chip manufacturers continuously track their goods as they move around the world. It also wants to make clear the companies don’t need to install a “kill switch” in their technology.
While the changes will be welcomed by the chip industry, they could anger China hawks who want strict approaches to protecting U.S. advanced technology from being utilized by Beijing.
