Cruz says ‘public interest’ standard is outdated

Senate Commerce Committee Chair Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said Wednesday it’s time to “revisit” the Communications Act of 1934, arguing that rules governing the “public interest” of content on the nation’s airwaves are obsolete.

The standard, which requires broadcasters to serve the “public interest,” has been at the center of the controversy over Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr’s investigations and comments about TV networks.
