The Hill still wants the TikTok ban — and a deal

Lawmakers from both parties are struggling to reconcile the fact they passed a law to ban TikTok starting Sunday with their desire to see the popular Chinese-owned app saved through a last-minute deal with an American buyer.

One escape hatch closed earlier today when the Supreme Court upheld the law putting the ban in place.

Many lawmakers are pressing for President Joe Biden to trigger a 90-day delay of the ban allowed under the law before he leaves office. The White House says that’s not happening. Some are saying President-elect Donald Trump can do it when he takes office Monday, but that appears to be trickier legal terrain.

For the moment, anxiety levels are high and confusion reigns. Let’s dig in.
